故事描述女警官Catherine（Sarah Lancashire）带领一个调查组来到约克郡一处偏远的山谷调查一起绑架案，但很快发现案情线索复杂。在一连串多米诺骨牌式的事件发生后，这起案件引出了多起更加严重的犯罪。。从1919年的春天到1921年1月，陆续共有20批、1800多名留法勤工俭学生以同样的方式漂洋过海。他们之中，出发时年龄最小的12岁，最大的54岁。几十年后，他们之中出现了新中国的总理，共和国元帅，改革开放的总设计师，核物理科学家，文学家、美术家、音乐家……他们是追寻理想的一代，他们是中国共产党的建立者，他们是新中国的创建者、建设者，见证了国家从封闭到开放，从落后到富强的伟大历史跨越。。Framing StoryDr Martin (Robert Powell) arrives at a secluded asylum "for the incurably insane" to be interviewed for a job by the wheelchair-using, authoritarian Dr Lionel Rutherford (Patrick Magee). Rutherford explains that he owes his current incapacitation to an attack by an inmate. Rutherford reveals his unorthodox plan to determine Martin's suitability for the post of head...。
